Sävsjö's Unique Approach to Parking Fines: A Community Without Tickets

Forget about parking attendants lurking in the bushes of Småland's Sävsjö.

In Sävsjö municipality, you can park almost anywhere you like without the risk of returning to find a yellow ticket under your windshield wiper.

The municipality, with just over 11,500 residents, has completely stopped issuing parking fines.

And it seems to be working.

A few years ago, the municipality tried hiring parking attendants from Securitas. This was partly due to drivers parking in spaces reserved for the disabled.

"People quickly realized that parking there would cost money, and the misbehavior stopped," says Christian Democrat Stefan Gustafsson, former municipal councilor in Sävsjö, to P4 Jönköping.

So the trial was short-lived.

Parking Attendants Seen as an Unnecessary Expense

When the problems disappeared, the municipality removed both the attendants and the yellow tickets.

Stefan Gustafsson believes that parking attendants should not be employed unnecessarily.

"It didn't add up. The number of parking fines didn't cover the service we purchased, and we had no problem with these fines. So we said if it happens again, we'll hire a security company again," says Stefan Gustafsson to P4 Jönköping.

For those who park incorrectly in Sävsjö, there is no fee – but the municipality might contact the vehicle owner.

Freedom with responsibility is the current approach.

"I think it's an advantage for Sävsjö's residents that parking is free, and I believe that's why it's largely managed according to laws and regulations," says Thomas Lundin, street manager in Sävsjö, to P4 Jönköping.
