Sudden Storm Winds to Hit Sweden: Prepare for Unexpected Gusts

Caught by a storm wind. On Friday, there's a risk you might be if you're not careful.

– It's best to secure your sun loungers so they don't blow into a neighbor's window, says Johan Groth, meteorologist at Stormgeo.

Warm air from the south is sweeping up and clashing with cooler air from the north. This meeting is causing thunderstorms and rain showers in parts of southern Norrland on Thursday.

A yellow warning has been issued by SMHI for parts of Jämtland County, northern Västernorrland, large parts of Västerbotten County, and eastern Norrbotten County.

On Friday, the thunderstorm is moving south and is expected to reach eastern Svealand and the Stockholm area by Friday evening.

Tricky Storm Winds May Surprise

But besides the thunder and lightning, another weather phenomenon looks set to cause trouble on Friday.

– The trickiest part when this front moves through is that there can be very strong gusts of wind, which can reach storm strength, says Johan Groth, meteorologist at Stormgeo.

The strong winds also appear to be able to strike suddenly.

– The gusts can come very unexpectedly. You might be at the cinema or a restaurant, and then when you come out, you're suddenly met by an intense storm wind.

Meteorologist's Tips

In some places, it may be partly cloudy and dry during the day, and also reasonably warm – over 20 degrees. Therefore, Johan Groth believes there is a risk that some will be caught off guard during their outdoor activities when the strong wind makes an unexpected visit.

– It's best to secure your sun loungers so they don't blow into a neighbor's window. If you have a small boat, it's good if it's moored so it doesn't break free, advises Johan Groth.

On Saturday, the winds will then sweep further northeast.

– It will be very windy in parts of northern Sweden, probably also on the Uppland coast and the Åland Sea.
