SMHI Issues Severe Rain and Flood Warnings

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has issued new warnings for heavy rain and potential flooding for Sunday and the beginning of the week. In Gotland, up to 80 millimeters of rain may fall locally. Meanwhile, more rain is expected in the already affected north.

On Sunday afternoon, heavy rain will move over Gotland.

"The rain is expected to be intense and could result in large amounts in a short time. Thunderstorms may also occur," writes SMHI.

Locally, up to 80 millimeters of rain may fall.

According to SMHI, rain and showers could lead to significant precipitation in a short period. There is a risk of flooding in basements and stormwater systems. People are advised to clear gutters and storm drains to reduce risks and be prepared for traffic disruptions if roads and underpasses flood.

More Rain in the North

During the night into Monday, the rain is expected to move away from the island.

Instead, it will climb northward, and the already affected Västernorrland County may receive even more rain. Here too, one should be prepared for flooding.

"Due to the saturated ground, water can quickly find its way to watercourses, and there is a general risk of high flows in streams and smaller rivers," writes SMHI.

In total, between 30 and 50 millimeters of rain may fall from midnight on Sunday to 4 PM on Monday afternoon.
