Royal Couple's Secret Getaway to the French Riviera Unveiled

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia squeezed in a private trip to France at the beginning of summer. The secret vacation was accidentally revealed through a fitness app. Photos show how they spent their days in the sun.

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia's official calendars were empty during the second half of June.

On June 16, they were both engaged in royal duties, but then took a break over their 49th wedding anniversary on June 19 and Midsummer.

The royal couple took the opportunity to travel to the French Riviera and their summer residence, Villa Mirage, near Golfe de Saint-Tropez.

The secret vacation was uncovered by Dagens Nyheter when it was found that the royal couple's bodyguards logged runs on the fitness app Strava near Villa Mirage, thus revealing the trip.

– We do not comment on the royal family's private events, says the court's information chief Margareta Thorgren.

Enjoyed a Boat Trip with Friends

Now, Expressen can show photos from the June trip. The royal couple spent time on their twelve-meter-long boat – Polaris – with a group of friends.

Protected from the sun behind metallic blue sunglasses and a cap, King Carl Gustaf is seen taking out the excursion thermos as he stands at the front of the bow.

Queen Silvia chose aviator sunglasses for the boat trip and kept the French summer sun at bay with a cap as well.

Villa Mirage is the king's private residence, which he inherited from his uncle Prince Bertil in the late 90s.

The house is located by the water in the exclusive coastal community of Sainte-Maxime, and King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia try to visit at least once a year.
