Police Issue Warnings on Jet Ski Regulations

As summer temperatures rise, many people are taking to the water on jet skis. However, failing to adhere to all regulations can result in fines and criminal charges.

During the summer, the police receive numerous complaints from individuals disturbed by jet skis.

The police are now warning about the mistakes one can make while operating a jet ski—and what actions are considered criminal.

Training Required

Complaints to the police often involve reckless drivers, jet skis operating too close to swimmers, or riders in prohibited areas.

To operate a jet ski, one must have both approved training and a license. Operating without a license is a criminal offense and can result in fines.

To obtain a license, one must be at least 15 years old and knowledgeable about traffic rules and what the police refer to as "general maritime safety."

If you lend a jet ski to someone without a license, you can also be fined, as you are considered responsible. Those who do not follow the rules may also be suspected of a crime and risk losing their license.

Police Advice: Do Not Disturb

Jet ski regulations vary from municipality to municipality, but the police urge all riders to follow some basic rules.

Firstly, do not operate in a "disturbing manner" near swimming areas or where you could pose a danger to yourself or others. Additionally, do not operate under the influence of alcohol.

The police also advise riders to be properly equipped, always carry their license while riding, and be aware of specific regulations that may apply in the area where they are operating.
