A significant fire has erupted in the roof of a multi-family building in Högsbo, Gothenburg. Several apartments have been completely destroyed by the blaze.
– At least one stairwell will not be accessible for return, says Millie Ekman, operations manager at the rescue service.
The alarm about the fire came at 1:30 PM on Tuesday afternoon. Residents of the building and a preschool in the property were evacuated.
The fire brigade is on site with a large number of units.
According to the rescue service, the smell of smoke can be felt in large parts of central Gothenburg. People who feel discomfort from the smoke are advised to go indoors and close windows, doors, and ventilation.
There are no reports of injuries from the fire.

By 8 PM, the rescue service announced that the most intense firefighting efforts were over, but they will remain throughout the night to manage smoldering fires and prevent spreading.
Parts of the building will be completely destroyed, including several apartments.

“Everyone is Shaken”
A woman living in the building rushed home as soon as she learned about the fire. When she arrived, she saw flames bursting through the roof.
– Everyone is very shaken. It's frightening to see your house burning, she tells GP.
The principal of the preschool that was evacuated tells GP that the police came and said, “you must get out.”
The children then did exactly as they had learned in previous fire drills.
– Some didn't put on their shoes, just as they were taught. Then we gathered and talked, and several children exclaimed, “this is exactly what we practiced!” says the principal.
