Leadership Crisis at Social Democrats' Women's Wing Sparks Controversy
Mohamsson: Glad I'm Not a Social Democrat
The work environment at the Social Democrats' women's wing, S-kvinnor, is reportedly very poor, according to several former and current employees. Despite chairperson Annika Strandhäll being aware of the issues for many years, as reported by Expressen.
"This shows a lack of leadership," says Simona Mohamsson, Minister of Education and Integration.
The environment within S-kvinnor is said to be characterized by verbal abuse, reprimands, and control, as revealed by Expressen over the weekend.
Former and current employees interviewed by Expressen claim that the union secretary and office manager, Nina Unesi, runs the organization with an iron fist.
One of those aware of the work environment issues is the union's chairperson, Annika Strandhäll.
Despite the problems being known for many years, Unesi was re-elected for another two years at the end of August.
Annika Strandhäll blames the nomination committee, which proposed Unesi, while the committee shifts the responsibility back to Strandhäll and the union board.
"It's not our role to handle it. It's actually the union board's role," said the nomination committee's chairperson, Chatarina Holmberg, to Expressen last week.
"Glad I'm Not a Social Democrat Today"
Expressen's investigation has prompted a reaction from the Liberal party leader and Minister of Education and Integration, Simona Mohamsson. She says there seems to be a lack of leadership within S-kvinnor.
"One must work hard to ensure that one practices what one preaches. You choose what kind of leadership you want, especially as a politician. And this, I think, shows a lack of leadership."
She hopes that the Social Democrats take the reports seriously.
"Because it is completely unacceptable to have such a work environment."
She sees a larger pattern within the Social Democrats where one hand doesn't know what the other is doing.
"I would say that the Social Democrats have quite a few problems they need to address. But I'm glad I'm not a Social Democrat today."
Mikael Damberg, former finance minister in Magdalena Andersson's government, has also taken note of the reporting.
"I have no knowledge or insight into the matter. I expect S-kvinnor to handle the issue. There should be order and discipline in an office."
Do you have confidence in Annika Strandhäll to lead the union?
"It's up to S-kvinnor to decide who is chairperson and how they organize themselves, so I expect them to do that themselves."
Expressen is seeking Magdalena Andersson.
