Former Liberal Party leader Jan Björklund has been appointed as the King's closest aide, granting him residence in a newly renovated luxury apartment in Östermalm. The 290-square-meter apartment, located near Strandvägen, places him as a neighbor to Princess Madeleine. This prestigious position comes after his tenure as Sweden's ambassador in Rome.

Jan Björklund Moves into Renovated Luxury Apartment Provided by the King
Former Liberal Party leader Jan Björklund has a new job as the King's closest aide. As a result, he will move into a newly renovated, exclusive apartment in Östermalm provided by the King, reports Hem och Hyra. In the 290-square-meter, six-room apartment, he will be neighbors with Princess Madeleine.
After five years as Sweden's ambassador in Rome, Jan Björklund is taking on another top position. At the turn of the year, he will become the Marshal of the Realm, the highest-ranking official at the court and the King's closest associate.
As many know, Stockholm's housing market can be tough, but this has not been a concern for Björklund.
In connection with his new appointment, he will move into one of the court's most attractive apartments—close to Strandvägen, writes Hem och Hyra.
Neighboring Princess Madeleine
From October 1, he and his family will reside in an apartment in the Royal Stables in Östermalm, managed by the National Property Board of Sweden and covered by the royal right of disposition. In the same building live, among others, Princess Madeleine and her family, as well as several friends and acquaintances of the royal family.
The King decides who gets to live there, and Björklund has agreed to waive the right of tenancy protection—meaning he may need to move if the court requires the apartment for another purpose.
The apartment has six rooms and a kitchen, spread over 290 square meters, and is rented out for 29,540 SEK per month.
Before moving in, the apartment has been renovated with newly sanded floors, freshly painted walls, and a refreshed balcony.
The royal right of disposition covers around 350 state-owned residences, most of which are in exclusive locations in the Stockholm area. The royal family does not pay rent for the residences they use, as is the case for Princess Madeleine's over 400-square-meter luxury apartment in the same neighborhood.
