Former Minister Annika Åhnberg Passes Away After Illness

Former Minister of Agriculture Annika Åhnberg (S) has passed away after a period of illness. Her husband, Bertil Åhnberg, was by her side until the end.

"A life partner has disappeared. It is very sorrowful," says her husband.

Two years ago, the former minister, who resided in Ingelstorp, Skåne, was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor. She has now died at her home, aged 75, and is mourned by her husband, six children, and twelve grandchildren.

The Åhnbergs had been a couple for over 50 years and celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last autumn.

"It is very sorrowful and somewhat incomprehensible. Even though you are aware it would happen, you stand there quite bare," says Bertil Åhnberg.

Annika had many irons in the fire throughout her life. In the 1980s, she joined the Left Party but left after a few years due to their critical stance on the EU. Shortly thereafter, she joined the Social Democrats, then led by Göran Persson, where she was appointed Minister of Agriculture.

"She was a person who was very clear, curious, and eager to learn. And she was often right," says Bertil Åhnberg.

Later in life, Annika served as chair of Save the Children, sat on several boards, and was actively involved in her local community.
