Forest Fire at Military Site Sparks Explosive Concerns in Stockholm

A forest fire is raging on Järvafältet, north of Stockholm. The area includes a former military shooting range, and the rescue services warn that old ammunition could explode on site.

"That's why we've issued a public warning, as we don't know exactly where the items are located," says Mathias Häglund from the rescue services.

The fire is burning in a forest area measuring 100 by 200 meters on Thursday afternoon. The area is located on Järvafältet in the municipalities of Sollentuna and Järfälla.

Since a decommissioned military shooting range is within the fire-affected area, the rescue services have issued an important public announcement.

"Ongoing forest fire in an area with unexploded ammunition. The rescue leader urges everyone to stay away from the area and heed police instructions," the announcement states.

Risk of Explosions

According to Mathias Häglund from the rescue services, there is a risk that the ammunition could explode.

"That's why we've issued a public warning. We don't want people in the area. We don't know exactly where these items are located," he says.

The police are assisting the rescue services and have cordoned off the area around the fire with a safety distance of 800 meters.

According to Mathias Häglund, the fire is spreading slowly, but there is no risk of it reaching nearby residential areas.

"The area is dry, but the fire is currently confined to the forest and land."

The firefighting efforts on site are expected to continue for a few more hours, according to the rescue services.
