Explosion in Östberga: Man Seen Before Car Blast in Stockholm

A person died in an outdoor explosion in Östberga, southern Stockholm, on Friday evening. The deceased has not yet been identified. However, according to information from Expressen, it is a man who may have been carrying the explosive device himself.

Around 9 PM on Friday, police were alerted to a loud bang in Östberga, southern Stockholm. A car exploded in the middle of the street in the residential area, resulting in one fatality.

"We assume that something exploded, which then caused the car to explode," said police spokesperson Mats Eriksson on Friday.

The deceased has not been identified, but according to Expressen, it is a man. He may have been carrying the explosive device himself, Expressen reports. The man was seen trying to light something at a doorway but was interrupted and ran from the scene. Shortly after, the explosion occurred, according to Expressen.

"That could be the case, but it's too early to say anything for sure. Once we have the results from the technical investigation and have compiled all the interviews, we will know more," said police spokesperson Per Fahlström.

The deceased was found "in connection with the car," according to the police, who do not wish to provide further details.

Extensive Operation

Throughout the night into Saturday, a large police operation was underway, with a significant cordon in place.

At the same time, police are investigating any connections to the night's explosion in Södertälje or to organized crime.

"This is routine in this type of case," says Per Fahlström.

Camera Inventory

The incident is being investigated as murder, public endangerment, and a serious violation of the law on flammable and explosive materials.

"The preliminary investigation is in full swing, and we will have an increased police presence in Östberga during the day. Among other things, we will inventory cameras and continue door-to-door inquiries," says Per Fahlström.

The district administration writes on Facebook that they will have crisis support available at Östberga Square and Östberga Cultural House during the day.
