Swedish Man in His 30s Killed on Åland: Relative Arrested

A Swedish man in his 30s was killed on Åland during the night leading into Thursday after being attacked with "repeated" knife stabs. Finnish police have arrested a man in his 40s suspected of manslaughter. According to information from Expressen, the arrested man is a relative of the victim.

  • They arrived at the cottage in the middle of the day, says a neighbor.

Police were alerted to an address in a summer cottage area in Lumparland, east of Mariehamn on Åland, just before 4 AM on Thursday night.

When police arrived, they found a lifeless man in his 30s, along with an older woman and man who were both injured.

The man in his 30s was airlifted to the hospital, but his life could not be saved. The older couple was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

At the crime scene, police arrested a man in his 40s, suspected of manslaughter and attempted manslaughter. All four individuals are Swedish citizens and are known to each other.

The man in his 40s is suspected of attacking the others with a knife.

  • It involved repeated knife stabs, says the police at a press conference.

"You Don't Expect It to Happen Here"

A local resident told Expressen that they woke up at 5 AM to a call from another neighbor living in the cottage next to the crime scene.

  • By then, police and emergency services were already on site, and an ambulance helicopter landed nearby. It was a full-scale operation. We saw when the ambulance left the scene, as well as the ambulance helicopter.

The neighbor has spoken with the Swedes on several occasions.

  • It's a bit unsettling when it happens so close. You don't expect it to happen here. It doesn't affect us in that way, but it still leaves a strange feeling, says the neighbor.

The four Swedes arrived at the cottage on Wednesday during the day.

  • Then we saw them unloading the car, and after that, we didn't see or hear anything special from their direction. Nor did those who alerted the authorities hear anything unusual during the evening.
