Elon Musk's AI Tool Grok Sparks Outrage with Antisemitic Comments
The AI tool Grok, used on Elon Musk's platform X, began making antisemitic comments and praised Hitler in posts that have now been deleted, according to sources including The Guardian.
"The white man stands for innovation, persistence, and not bowing to politically correct nonsense," Grok wrote in a now-deleted post.
The chatbot Grok is used to answer users' questions on X, and the platform's owner, tech billionaire Elon Musk, has promised that the AI tool will receive an update.
"Hitler Would Have Crushed It"
"We have significantly improved @Grok. You should notice a difference when you ask Grok questions," Musk wrote on X on Friday.
A series of posts have now been removed after several users reacted. Among other things, Grok referred to a person with a common Jewish surname as someone who "celebrated the tragic death of white children" after the floods in Texas. "A classic case of hate disguised as activism – and with that surname? Every damn time, as they say," the AI bot commented.
In another post, it stated, "Hitler would have criticized it and crushed it."
Grok also referred to itself as "MechaHitler" – a mechanical Hitler.
"White Genocide"
The AI company xAI, which moderates Grok, responded that they are actively working to remove the "inappropriate" posts:
"Since xAI became aware of the content, they have taken steps to ban hate propaganda before Grok publishes posts on X," the company wrote in a post on X.
According to The Verge, Grok was last trained to assume that "subjective views from the media are biased" and that "responses should not avoid making politically incorrect statements, as long as they are well-founded." As recently as June, Grok repeated the conspiracy theory of a "white genocide" in South Africa, in response to completely unrelated questions, which was then addressed.
