Daniel Ståhl's New Strategy for World Championships: 'Full Throttle'

Daniel Ståhl aims to defend his World Championship gold medal, this time with a new approach.

"We've found a good method that works," says the discus star.

At the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, Daniel Ståhl won his second career gold medal.

However, 2024 was less successful, including a seventh-place finish in the Olympic final.

For the 2025 World Championship year, the training regimen has been adjusted to include fewer competitions and a higher training volume.

"This year, we have a bit more breathing room. We can compete, train, compete, and then train again. We missed some of the things Daniel needs," said coach Staffan Jönsson to Radiosporten.

Daniel Ståhl agrees:

"I'm focusing on quality instead of just going all out," says the 32-year-old.

The new training plan has allowed Ståhl to focus on the details.

"We've found some technical details during the fall, winter, and spring. We've found a good method that works. So it will be exciting to test it now. It feels good, actually. It's just about going full throttle in the summer and hoping for the best," says Ståhl.

Impressive Weights: 'Good Throttle'

According to Staffan Jönsson, part of the training involves maintaining leg pressure during throws. But it's not just the lower body being trained. Last fall, Ståhl posted a clip on Instagram lifting a pair of enormous dumbbells.

The over two-meter-tall giant laughs when the dumbbells are mentioned.

What do they weigh?

"I don't quite remember, but it could be between 60 and 70 kilos. It's good throttle," says Ståhl with a smile.

Both physical and detail training seem to have had an immediate effect. With a throw of 67.07, Daniel Ståhl placed second in the season opener in Doha, Qatar.

"I feel like I'm getting into the groove with training and everything. It's going to be an exciting summer," he says.

The World Championships in Tokyo will take place from September 13–21.
