Storm Floris Disrupts West Coast: Västtrafik on High Alert

Floris is currently wreaking havoc on Sweden's west coast. On the Weather Islands in the archipelago, winds have reached nearly 27 meters per second.

– If you're out on a boat, hopefully, you've found a suitable harbor and sought shelter, says Stormgeo meteorologist Johan Groth.

The west coast has experienced strong winds throughout Tuesday as storm Floris arrived from the UK.

The strongest winds have been recorded at sea. The weather stations measuring the highest winds are all offshore, explains Johan Groth.

– The highest winds were on the Weather Islands, 26.9 meters per second. On Nordkoster, it was 26 meters per second, and on Måseskär, 24.9.

A yellow wind warning has been issued for parts of the west coast, but so far, the winds have not caused major chaos. Västtrafik, which manages a large part of the public transport in the area, has entered a state of alert due to the storm. Trains and ferries have been canceled, reports P4 Göteborg.

Worst at Sea

The wind is mainly causing issues at sea, and several gale warnings have been issued by SMHI.

– If you're out with a leisure boat, hopefully, you've found a suitable harbor and sought shelter. You should be cautious about setting out with a boat tomorrow as well, says Johan Groth.

The winds will continue on Wednesday across almost the entire country. Generally, the weather will be unstable, and in Västerbotten's coastal region, SMHI warns of heavy rain.

By the weekend, conditions are expected to improve, and apart from a low-pressure system moving in on Friday, the weather will be quite good for the rest of the week.

– Friday is a bit uncertain with a high risk of local showers. But then the weekend will bring fairly decent weather. No major high-pressure system is on the way, but neither is any deep low-pressure system, says Johan Groth.
