Couple Brutally Murdered in Piteå: Jonathan Johansson-Kangas Sentenced to Life
Two individuals planned to rob a couple in their home in Piteå, enlisting the help of the "mentally unstable and aggressive" Jonathan Johansson-Kangas. The couple was bound, assaulted, robbed, and brutally stabbed 74 times. All three have now been sentenced to prison, with the murderer receiving a life sentence.
The two men had been a couple for over 20 years. One was described as funny, helpful, and incredibly kind, while the other was cozy, humorous, and witty.
In January this year, a neighbor noticed that the area outside the couple's door had not been shoveled. Upon entering the house, he found the men stabbed to death.
According to the indictment, they were stabbed a total of 74 times.
Shortly after the incident, 33-year-old Jonathan Johansson-Kangas was arrested. According to the prosecutor, he was at the couple's home because a 31-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man had brought him along during a robbery. All three suspects were charged with aggravated robbery.
Jonathan Johansson-Kangas was also charged with the two murders, while the other two were charged with aggravated involuntary manslaughter.
"I argue that it was their plan to do this, and they brought the 33-year-old as some form of reinforcement. They left the house earlier, and he remained. I argue that he would never have come there if it weren't for these two's planning," prosecutor Lindha Strömberg told Piteå Tidning.
Now, Luleå District Court announces that Jonathan Johansson-Kangas is sentenced to life imprisonment for the double murder and aggravated robbery.
The 31-year-old woman and the 40-year-old man are both sentenced for aggravated involuntary manslaughter and aggravated robbery. They are sentenced to eight years in prison each.
"There can be no doubt that the acts caused severe suffering for the victims. The acts were also characterized by a marked ruthlessness," writes Luleå District Court in its judgment.
Not Mentally Disturbed
During the trial, Jonathan Johansson-Kangas admitted to killing the couple. The 31-year-old and 40-year-old acknowledged parts of the events but denied the crime.
Jonathan Johansson-Kangas has previously been convicted of several crimes, including violent offenses, but never any really serious crimes. He has received psychiatric compulsory care intermittently for more than ten years but was not deemed to have any serious mental disorder when he killed the men.
