Carl Bildt Criticizes Trump's Stance on Russian Aggression

The U.S. response to Russia's violation of Polish airspace this week did not impress Carl Bildt. With Donald Trump in the White House, Ukraine cannot count on American support in the war against Russia. "The U.S. has abandoned us on this issue," writes the former foreign minister on his blog.

Carl Bildt believes that the U.S. President and Secretary of State "wavered" in their assessments of the Russian airspace violation when they initially suggested it might have been a mistake.

This is what the former prime minister writes in a post on his blog.

Other top politicians and military experts were instead clear that the airspace violation was most likely intentional—and completely unacceptable.

Carl Bildt argues that it is now "obvious" that Ukraine cannot rely on U.S. support in the war against Russia, as long as Donald Trump is in power.

"Many in Kiev still hope that the White House can support them, but the brutal truth is that Trump has cut almost all military and financial support, and on important points, he rather yields to Putin," writes Carl Bildt.

"Should Be Obvious"

That Donald Trump calls the war in Ukraine "Biden's and Zelensky's war," as recently as Saturday, is an example of this, according to Bildt.

"He cannot even say that this is Putin's war, even though this should be obvious to anyone with basic literacy. The U.S. has abandoned us on this issue. And thus, the question of support for Ukraine becomes primarily a question for Europe."

Carl Bildt further writes that leaders like Vladimir Putin and Benjamin Netanyahu "have learned that they can do as they please" without any particular reaction from the U.S.

"Netanyahu has learned this throughout the Gaza situation and especially with his attacks in and against Iran, which he has also managed to involve Trump in."
