
Car Crashes into Family on Malmö Sidewalk
A car has crashed into a family on a sidewalk in central Malmö. A school-aged girl is hospitalized with serious injuries, while a two-year-old girl is slightly injured. A total of four people have been taken to the hospital.
– The car was turning at high speed, lost control, and skidded onto the sidewalk, says an eyewitness.
At 17:41, the alarm was raised that several people had been hit by a car on Föreningsgatan in central Malmö. Emergency services, ambulances, and police have been dispatched to the scene.
The area is cordoned off.
Four People Hospitalized
According to the police, the car drove onto the sidewalk and hit the people.
– I first heard a huge crash, and then a heart-wrenching scream, says Marcus Ekström, who lives near the accident site.
An eyewitness on the street describes the sequence of events.
– The car was turning at high speed, lost control, and skidded onto the sidewalk where people were standing, says an eyewitness.
Another describes it as a "race," with the car accelerating sharply. The police have not disclosed their view of the incident.
– We are still looking for more witnesses, so we don't want to influence their perception of what happened. But the witnesses we have spoken to so far have a consistent view, that's all I can say, says Evelina Olsson from the regional command center.
The four injured, two women and two children, belong to the same family.
– All have been taken to the hospital, but their condition is unclear, says police spokesperson Evelina Olsson.
According to Region Skåne, a girl aged between 6 and 10 has serious injuries, while a two-year-old girl has minor injuries. Two women in their 40s are also slightly injured.
"Loud, Prolonged Tire Screeches"
The driver of the car, a man in his 20s, has been taken for questioning by the police. The car has been seized. The police have launched a preliminary investigation, but there is no criminal classification yet.
– According to initial information from witnesses on the scene, it is believed not to be a deliberate act, but rather a pure accident, says Evelina Olsson from the police.
– We will take it to a prosecutor before we proceed with a criminal classification, she clarifies at 20:30.
An eyewitness reports that a damaged stroller lies beside the bus stop, where the accident seems to have occurred. A bench is completely destroyed after the collision.
– I heard loud, prolonged tire screeches before the crash, says the witness.
Crime scene technicians are now being sent to the site to secure evidence of the accident.
