Anders Ygeman Denies Demotion, Embraces New Role in Education

Anders Ygeman (S) is stepping down from his role as spokesperson for migration and social insurance issues. He insists this is "absolutely not" a demotion.

Anders Ygeman entered the Swedish Parliament in 1996. As a veteran Social Democrat, he has served on nearly every committee and is currently the senior member in terms of service years.

Now, he is changing roles again, moving from spokesperson for migration and social insurance to vice chairman of the parliamentary education committee.

While some media outlets described this as a demotion, Ygeman disagrees.

– Absolutely not, I think they just misunderstood the whole situation. On the contrary, I am really looking forward to working on educational issues, he says.

Andersson: Important Issues

Anders Ygeman finds the new issues "very enjoyable."

– They are both important and enjoyable. As Palme said, it is in the children that we see the future grow. What could be more important than that?

Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson also states that this is not a demotion.

– Taking responsibility for educational issues is one of the most important tasks in social democracy and for a labor movement, she says.
