YouTube is testing AI technology to identify teenage users on its platform, aiming to protect them from inappropriate content. Initially launched in the U.S., the tool assesses users' ages based on their viewing habits and restricts access to certain content for those under 18. Personalized ads are also halted for these users. The initiative may expand globally, including to Sweden, if successful.

YouTube Leverages AI to Identify Teen Users and Enhance Safety
YouTube is now employing artificial intelligence to identify teenagers on its platform, aiming to protect young users from inappropriate content.
The initiative is currently being tested in the U.S. market, targeting users who may be younger than the age they claimed when registering their accounts. Initially, this is a limited test, with a broader rollout planned if successful.
The AI tool determines viewers' ages based on the categories and specific clips they watch. If a user is identified as under 18, YouTube implements several measures: access to certain types of content is restricted, and all personalized ads on the platform are halted.
Appeals Process Available
If someone is incorrectly assessed as under 18, they can appeal, but some form of proof, such as a selfie or ID, will be required. The U.S. test will begin in the coming weeks, but YouTube claims the tool is already successfully used in several other markets, though it hasn't disclosed which ones.
It's currently unclear if AI identification will be rolled out in Sweden, but many features YouTube launches in the U.S. eventually appear there as well.
