Witness the Spectacular Blood Moon Over Sweden This Weekend

On Sunday evening, the moon will turn red for several hours. Here's how to enhance your chances of witnessing this lunar phenomenon.

A lunar eclipse only occurs during a full moon when the sun, Earth, and moon align, with our planet positioned in the middle. The Earth's shadow falls on the moon, causing it to be either partially or completely obscured. During a total lunar eclipse, like the one happening this weekend, the event is also known as a blood moon because the moon's usually bright light takes on a distinctly red hue.

Earlier this year, the first blood moon was visible in Sweden early in the morning.

You can catch this year's second blood moon on the seventh day of the week—look east at the first (faint) moonlight. As long as clouds don't obstruct the view, the moon should be easy to spot.

No Need to Protect Your Eyes

According to NASA's calculations for the lunar eclipse on September 7, the peak of the spectacle is expected around 8 PM Swedish time. The entire lunar eclipse will last for three and a half hours.

While looking directly at a solar eclipse can be harmful to your eyes, a lunar eclipse is completely safe to watch.
