Weather Chaos Across Sweden: Heatwaves and Torrential Rains Expected

Weather Chaos Across Sweden Tomorrow

Wednesday is set to be challenging in Norrland with extreme heat and fire risk. Meanwhile, SMHI warns of downpours in the south, with up to 50 millimeters of rain expected in Götaland.

– This equates to half a month's rainfall in just one day, says meteorologist Josefin Qvarnesjö-Bergstedt.

A tropical night was experienced by residents of Norrbotten and Västerbotten, as temperatures did not drop below 20 degrees on Tuesday night.

The heat is expected to persist, and SMHI's warning of high temperatures across almost all of Norrland remains in effect for Wednesday.

– Temperatures are expected to reach up to 30 degrees. In central Norrland, just above Östersund, it will be hottest with temperatures over 30 degrees, says Josefin Qvarnesjö-Bergstedt, meteorologist at Stormgeo.

“Extremely High Risk of Wildfires”

Fans, parasols, and easy access to water will be essential for Norrland residents tomorrow. But heatstroke is not the only danger brought by the high pressure.

– Due to the dry and hot conditions in the north, there is an extremely high risk of wildfires, says Josefin Qvarnesjö-Bergstedt.

Further south, the story is reversed. A low-pressure system with more humid and cooler air prevails.

– In the border area where these two air masses meet, very heavy rain showers occur. We also see that it may rain in Skåne, says Qvarnesjö-Bergstedt.

“Severe Thunderstorms with the Rain”

The worst conditions are expected in southern Svealand and northern Götaland. SMHI has issued a yellow warning for torrential rain, expected to hit early Wednesday morning. According to Qvarnesjö-Bergstedt, up to 50 millimeters of rain could fall in some areas.

– This equates to half a month's rainfall in just one day. Additionally, severe thunderstorms are expected with this rain, she says.

The storm also poses a risk of flooding in basements, stormwater systems, and underpasses. Those traveling on the roads are advised to adjust their speed and allow extra time for their journey. The rain affects visibility and increases the risk of hydroplaning.

Water Shortage in Southern Sweden

Southern Sweden is currently also at risk of water shortages, with low groundwater levels.

– It has rained quite little for some time, and the sun has dried the ground. Some counties have imposed irrigation bans. Water should not be wasted in these areas; for example, there is no need to water the lawn every day, says Josefin Qvarnesjö-Bergstedt.

After the country endures this ordeal of high temperatures, downpours, and thunderstorms, the weekend brings calming news.

– Towards the end of the week, it looks like it will stabilize with temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees across the country. But it will continue to be warmest in Norrland, says Qvarnesjö-Bergstedt.
