Vänsterpartiet's Demand on Forssell
– Still Seeking Answers in Committee
Vänsterpartiet's Tony Haddou believes many questions remain for Johan Forssell regarding his son's alleged ties to right-wing extremism. He continues to push for the minister to be summoned to the social insurance committee following an interview on TV4's 'Nyhetsmorgon'.
– This government is jeopardizing Sweden's security, says Haddou. Both S and MP also support summoning Forssell.
On Wednesday, Expressen reported that Vänsterpartiet's Tony Haddou wants to summon Migration Minister Johan Forssell to the social insurance committee when parliament reconvenes. He seeks answers about what Forssell knew about his son's past activities in extremist circles and how it might have influenced Forssell's policies.
On Thursday, Forssell answered several questions on TV4's 'Nyhetsmorgon'. He discussed how long he has known about his son's extremist connections and his views on parental responsibility. He also stated his intention to remain as minister.
– I abhor right-wing extremism, and all other forms of extremism, Forssell said in the interview.
Vänsterpartiet Leader: Questions Remain
However, questions about the minister persist, according to Vänsterpartiet's migration policy spokesperson Tony Haddou. Therefore, even after the interview, it remains relevant to summon Forssell to the committee, he argues.
– I must be frank and say that I believe this government is endangering Sweden's security. What information might Forssell have taken home that extremist movements could benefit from? We feel the need for transparency.
– Does he understand the seriousness? Even more questions arose after 'Nyhetsmorgon'.
Many Seek Answers
The committee chair must call a meeting if at least five committee members request it. A committee meeting is a formal gathering where members of a parliamentary committee address matters within the committee's jurisdiction.
However, such a hearing as Haddou wants to conduct may require a majority in the committee to proceed, according to political scientist Jonas Hinnfors.
“There is an exception rule that only requires five committee members to request someone be summoned, but as I understand it, this does not apply to the case at hand,” he writes.
S and MP told Expressen on Wednesday that they support Haddou's call, which would meet the threshold. On Thursday, both parties confirmed they still want to summon Forssell to the committee.
C, also in opposition, has declined to comment on their stance.
Vänsterpartiet does not rule out taking further actions against Forssell, such as a report to the Constitutional Committee, KU.
– We still exclude nothing, says Tony Haddou.
