Viktor Gyökeres Declines Manchester United, Arsenal Emerges as New Contender
Viktor Gyökeres continues to attract interest from major clubs, particularly in the Premier League. However, Portuguese outlet Record reports that the Swedish forward has rejected Manchester United and his former coach Ruben Amorim.
Instead, Arsenal appears to be the club most likely to secure the national team striker.
This development follows a week of conflicting reports about Gyökeres. From claims that he is trying to force a move, which he has denied on social media, to the club allegedly inflating his price beyond agreed terms.
Now, details suggest a move from Sporting might be imminent.
Specifically, it is reported that Gyökeres has declined a reunion with his former Sporting coach, Ruben Amorim. His representatives have reportedly informed Manchester United's management that he will not accept any contract proposal from the club, according to Record. This marks a shift from previous reports.
This opens the door for another English giant pursuing him: Arsenal.
Contract Dispute
The "Gunners" are now reportedly leading the race and have emerged as the new favorites to sign Gyökeres. However, it comes at a cost.
The question remains: how much? The parties seem to disagree on what is reasonable to demand for the goal scorer's services, according to several media outlets.
Arsenal is reported to have made an initial offer of 55 million euros, plus ten million in bonuses. Sporting, however, did not find this acceptable. They have instead suggested that a price tag between 80 and 90 million euros would be more appropriate, including bonuses. Portuguese media describe it as Sporting "threatening" to demand up to 100 million euros.
The reason is reportedly that Gyökeres' representatives want to raise the price to trigger a clause involving a 10% payment on transfer sums over 60 million euros. Meanwhile, they argue that 100 million euros (1.1 billion kronor) is overpriced, something the club does not appreciate.
