Verdict Expected Today in Attempted Rape Case Against Former Boden Councilor Claes Nordmark
Today, the verdict is expected in the case against Claes Nordmark, the former municipal councilor of Boden. He is suspected of attempted rape and has previously resigned from all his political duties.
The suspicions against the councilor arose in March this year. He then chose to pause his political duties due to the ongoing preliminary investigation.
– The suspicion directed at me is unfounded, and I will do everything in my power within the framework of the ongoing preliminary investigation to prove my innocence, Nordmark said to NSD at the time.
Charged in May
In May, he was charged with attempted rape, a crime he denies.
– During the investigation, evidence has been secured in the form of, among other things, messages on mobile phones and medical certificates with the forensic doctor's assessment of the woman's injuries. I believe his intention was to have intercourse with the woman who did not consent to it, and I am pressing charges because I consider the evidence sufficient, the prosecutor said in a press release.
Nordmark's lawyer, Anna Melander, was surprised by the decision to press charges.
– I am very surprised by the prosecutor's decision to press charges. The defense has carefully reviewed the preliminary investigation. It is a word-against-word situation, and the plaintiff's story is not supported by the other evidence, she told NSD in May.
Applied for Transition Support
During the spring, Nordmark applied for transition support amounting to 1.3 million kronor, writes NSD. He has also sought help to find new employment.
The opposition has been critical, arguing that charged or convicted politicians should not be able to receive financial support.
The issue of transition support is still under consideration.
Worked Under Löfven
Claes Nordmark has been the chairman of the municipal executive board in Boden since 2018.
In Stefan Löfven's government, he was also a political advisor to the then Minister for Rural Affairs, Sven-Erik Bucht (S). He has also worked as a political secretary in the parliament for Mikael Damberg (S), now the economic policy spokesperson.
