Unpredictable Weather Sweeps Across Sweden: Rain and Heat Collide

It might be wise to prepare with both sunglasses and a raincoat. A band of rain is moving across the country.

Warm, rainy, and unpredictable. These are the words that define the current weather situation in Sweden.

Tropical nights with high temperatures in the east, while precipitation has settled over the western parts of the country.

– We have a high-pressure system in the east and a low-pressure system out in the Atlantic. In between, warm and humid air is being pushed up over Sweden, says Johan Groth, duty meteorologist at Stormgeo.

“Meandering Rain Band”

The most dramatic weather is expected in western Götaland and up towards Värmland over the weekend. A strong rain band has settled there.

– It's like a long sausage slowly sliding north. It almost dies out at times but quickly reforms. Locally, there can be quite a lot of rain, explains Johan Groth.

SMHI has issued a yellow warning for torrential rain in parts of northern Götaland, parts of inner and western Götaland, inner and western Svealand, and parts of southern Norrland on Friday.

In the east and north, however, it will feel more like summer. There, one can expect sunny spells and mild evening weather.

The fact that many have found weather apps struggling to be accurate in recent days has a natural explanation.

– It's a very unstable air mass. Forecasts change quickly, rain can turn to sun and vice versa, says Johan Groth.

How Long Will the Warmth Last?

The question is, of course, how long the mild evenings will remain.

– It looks like it will last for a while. That pump of warm and humid air continues to feed warmth over the country. But it won't be stable weather; we'll continue to live with showers and thunderstorms here and there, says Johan Groth.

Towards the end of next week, however, the wind might change.

– Then there's a chance that cooler Atlantic air will take over, bringing more classic low-pressure weather. But it's not certain yet, he says.
