Tragic Incident: Paramedic Killed in Suspected Murder in Nordanstig

A paramedic has been killed in an attack in Harmånger, Nordanstig municipality. A man in his mid-20s has been arrested on suspicion of murder. A neighbor reported hearing a scream from the stairwell and then saw a female paramedic lying on the ground.

Police received an alert about the attack from an ambulance at 11:30 AM on Saturday.

– We were informed that a paramedic had been injured by a sharp object wielded by a man at the scene, says Maria Hall, police spokesperson for the central region.

The paramedic was taken to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries. The family has been notified.

When the alert came, police responded with multiple resources, and residents in the area—a neighborhood with apartment buildings—were advised to stay indoors during the operation. A large area was cordoned off, and the national task force arrived after 2:30 PM.

The suspect, a man in his mid-20s, was found in a residence at the scene. He has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The residence is cordoned off for forensic examination.

Residents Heard a Scream

A neighbor recounts that the first thing she heard was a scream from a woman in the stairwell. She went to her window and looked out. On the ground lay a female paramedic.

– Another person was performing CPR. She continued for a long time, the woman says.

It wasn't long before the first police officers arrived.

– The police called me and said I shouldn't go out into the stairwell, as I was safer inside. I stayed inside for two hours. Then the police force came and let me out. They said I was safer outside than inside.

Police then arrested the suspected perpetrator in his residence.

– I stood a good distance away. I saw them bring him out in handcuffs.

She noticed nothing that preceded the ambulance's arrival at the address.

– I hadn't even heard the ambulance arrive.

The woman is shaken by the incident.

– It's not pleasant at all. I'll probably have nightmares tonight.

Another woman living nearby says:

– I haven't noticed anything more than that there's been a lot of activity here. And the police have called twice. The first time they said to stay inside, and the second time that the danger was over.

“Horrific Incident”

The regional council chairman, Patrik Stenvard (M), says the region is fully focused on crisis support right now.

– It's a horrific incident. It's shocking. But at the same time, we know that such things can happen, he says and continues:

– Our officials are handling this now. They are on site in northern Hälsingland. We have a staff group to take care of.

Minister: “Monitoring the Situation”

Health Minister Elisabet Lann (KD) says in a written statement:

– I have received the tragic news that a person working as a paramedic has lost their life in service. My thoughts are primarily with the relatives and colleagues. The police are now investigating what has happened. The government has no further information at this time but is monitoring the situation.
