Traffic Surge Expected During Midsummer: 'Will Increase'

Midsummer weekend is one of the biggest travel periods of the year, and 2025 is no exception. According to the Swedish Transport Administration, many cars are still on the roads by 6 PM on Thursday.

– It hasn't been accident-free, but most issues have been resolved, says Bengt Olsson from the Swedish Transport Administration.

Millions of Swedes travel during Midsummer, making it one of the most trafficked weekends of the year. So far, however, things have gone well, says Bengt Olsson, press officer at the Swedish Transport Administration.

– There are plenty of cars on the European roads, but they can handle it. It's better to stay on these roads than to take smaller ones.

The day before Midsummer is when most long-distance travelers are on the roads. On Midsummer's Eve, trips are usually shorter.

– People travel locally; if you live in Stockholm, you might go to Värmdö or Roslagen. It starts around nine in the morning and increases towards lunch. By eleven or twelve, it's at its peak, but by two o'clock, it's dead, says Bengt Olsson.

'Expected Up to 60,000 People'

Dalarna is a popular destination for many Midsummer enthusiasts. Mats Öhman is the police spokesperson in Bergslagen.

– There's a lot of traffic, but it's relatively calm. Nothing in Örebro County. In Dalarna, it increases a bit, but no accidents have been reported. You can expect traffic to increase during the evening, especially in Leksand.

The police have a special operation in Dalarna during the evening.

– Up to 60,000 people are expected, many arriving tonight.

– If there's a lot of traffic, there's no point in overtaking. But the weather conditions are good otherwise. Right now, there's no cause for concern.

Tip: How to Think

Bengt Olsson's main advice for drivers during the Midsummer weekend is to stay calm.

– It's really your own mood you need to watch out for. Don't rush and allow yourself to get stressed; you can actually decide a bit there. It's things like not driving too close to the car in front.
