Swedish Tourist Arrested for Flying Drone in Thailand Amid Tensions
Swedish Tourist Arrested for Flying Drone in Thailand
Thailand has banned drones due to tensions with neighboring Cambodia. A Swedish tourist was unaware of this.
The Swede was arrested in Pattaya on Sunday evening after flying his drone on the beach, according to Thai media.
The border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia ended last week, but the countries continue to accuse each other of violating the fragile ceasefire negotiated by Donald Trump.
As a result, Thailand has implemented a national ban on flying drones anywhere in the country, citing threats to national security.
Unaware of this, a Swedish tourist took out his drone on a beach in Pattaya on Sunday.
He was arrested shortly thereafter, according to Thai media.
Drone Confiscated
Thai police have published pictures of the drone, which was confiscated during the arrest.
In questioning, the man said he had just arrived in Pattaya for vacation and wanted to capture "the beautiful beach from above."
After being questioned by police, the man was released.
The border conflict between the two Southeast Asian neighbors has so far resulted in over 20 civilian deaths on both sides.
