Swedish Politician Resigns After Allegations of Supporting Criminal Motorcycle Gangs

Bruno Bergström, a local politician from the Sweden Democrats, has resigned from his role as a lay judge at Attunda District Court following revelations of his support for criminal motorcycle gangs like Hells Angels. Despite stepping down, Bergström continues to show support for these groups on social media. This comes amid a broader investigation by Expressen into politicians with ties to organized crime.

Swedish Politician Bruno Bergström Resigns After Motorcycle Gang Allegations

Bruno Bergström, a lay judge and member of the Sweden Democrats (SD), attempted to seize a microphone from an Expressen reporter when questioned about his support for criminal motorcycle gangs like Hells Angels. He has now resigned from his position at Attunda District Court. However, he continues to show support for Hells Angels on social media.

The Sweden Democrat local politician was exposed by the magazine Expo shortly after the 2022 election for liking and following motorcycle clubs, which the police classify as part of organized crime, on Facebook. Among the clubs he supported were several chapters of Hells Angels.

At the time, Bergström was the second vice chairman for SD in Sigtuna and retained several municipal assignments for the party. After Expressen revealed in autumn 2024 that Bergström still supported Hells Angels and other motorcycle gangs, he resigned from several positions but continued to serve as a lay judge at Attunda District Court.

Until now.

"He explained that he no longer wanted to be a lay judge, and I accepted that," said Chief Judge Anders Dereborg.

25 SD Politicians Exposed

The background is an investigation initiated by Expressen in May this year into all elected politicians expressing support for criminal motorcycle gangs, while their parties demand strong action against gang violence and crime.

Expressen has exposed a total of 25 Sweden Democrats with documented connections to the environment.

When Expressen questioned Bergström about his stance on the criminal motorcycle environment and his judicial role, he became physical with the newspaper's reporter David Baas, attempting to grab the microphone on camera.

"I sit in the district court, and you want to check a little, since you are judging people. That's the only defense I have," said Bergström.

Resigned During Meeting with Chief Judge

The information prompted Chief Judge Anders Dereborg at Attunda District Court to initiate a case regarding Bergström's suitability as a lay judge, while deciding that Bergström would not be called in during the investigation. Simultaneously, SD's group leader in Sigtuna, Rune Öhlund, urged Bergström to leave his judicial role.

Rune Öhlund himself was exposed in autumn 2022 for attending a party at Hells Angels and expressing support for the organization through membership in the closed Facebook group "Support 81 Uppsala," but today distances himself from the organization.

It is now clear that Bruno Bergström has finally chosen to resign as a lay judge.

According to a meeting note from earlier this summer, a meeting was held between Bergström and Chief Judge Anders Dereborg, where Dereborg wanted to discuss "information mainly about activities on social media that have emerged in the media."

"I immediately called him to a meeting, and it was decided that he would not serve until we had that meeting," said Dereborg.

"These are things we address in the introductory training for lay judges, that one should consider how to act outside the courtroom as well."

During the conversation with the chief judge, Bergström chose to request his own dismissal.

However, he still shows support for several Hells Angels chapters and other criminal motorcycle gangs on social media.

Expressen has once again sought Bruno Bergström for comment.
