Swedish Government Invests in Local Food Production: More Cows Needed

More Swedish food on the plate. The government aims to increase domestic food production. – More cows will be needed in this country, says Minister for Rural Affairs Peter Kullgren (KD).

Currently, only every other bite of food is Swedish, according to Peter Kullgren.

– Swedish food doesn't appear by itself. It requires hardworking farmers and companies ready to do the job, and a policy that takes responsibility and facilitates, says the Minister for Rural Affairs at a press conference.

However, to increase food production, more cows are needed, according to the government.

– For this to become a reality, Swedish dairy farmers need better competitive conditions, says Peter Kullgren.

The government is investing 282 million SEK annually for the next two years in an annual compensation to dairy farmers of 1,000 SEK per cow. This equates to 100,000 SEK per year for a dairy farmer with one hundred dairy cows.

Meanwhile, the right for dairy cows to graze will remain for a while longer.

This investment is one of several the government is making in the autumn budget to "ensure a sustainable food supply across the country."

The proposals need to be viewed in a total defense context, according to Minister for Civil Defense Carl-Oskar Bohlin (M).

– A prerequisite for food production that also functions under disrupted conditions and, in the worst case, war, is that we have a competitive food sector and agricultural production also during peacetime.
