Olof K Gustafsson, 32, has been seriously ill during his time in a U.S. prison. He spent three weeks in intensive care after suffering from acute pneumonia and respiratory failure.

– I was close to death, he says in a statement to Expressen.

The Swedish businessman is still awaiting his sentence after admitting to fraud and money laundering in a federal court in the USA.

During his time at the MDC prison in Los Angeles, the 32-year-old became seriously ill. In a written statement to Expressen, he says that on August 27, he was admitted to the intensive care unit.

– I was close to death... I was sick for 10 days until I received medical care from the prison.

Gustafsson claims he suffered from acute pneumonia and respiratory failure.

– I couldn't breathe, he says.

“Not a Pleasant Stay”

According to Gustafsson, he was treated in the unit for nearly three weeks, until September 18.

– I was confined to the hospital bed, couldn't walk the first week, and had two officers on either side 24/7.

He states that he is now on the mend but is still not fully recovered, with his lung capacity only about 60 percent of normal.

Gustafsson, who ran the company Escobar Inc named after the infamous drug lord Pablo Escobar, was extradited from Spain to the USA in March 2025.
