The Swedish government is proposing an investment of over one billion kronor in national cybersecurity in the upcoming budget.

Minister for Civil Defense, Carl-Oskar Bohlin (M), refers to this initiative as the 'cyber billion.' The plan includes 300 million kronor in 2026, followed by 350 and 400 million kronor in the subsequent two years. The funds will be distributed between the National Cybersecurity Center (NCSC) and the country's municipalities and regions.

"Unfortunately, there are several incidents that highlight the importance of this initiative. We want our authorities involved in critical societal functions to manage their cybersecurity in a way that prevents these types of attacks," Carl-Oskar Bohlin told TT.

One such incident was last year's attack on the IT company Tietoevry's data center, which affected numerous companies and authorities. Several regions had to enter emergency mode, with reports suggesting a Russian hacker group was responsible. However, Carl-Oskar Bohlin emphasizes that the threats are not solely from Russia:

"There are certainly qualified cyber threats from Russia, but also from other states. Additionally, there is a broader range of less sophisticated cybersecurity attacks, so it's not as simple as pointing to a single country."

Sweden's municipalities will now receive 200 million kronor annually, while regions will receive 50 million.
