Storm Gabriel Spares Sweden: A Weather Update
Storm Gabriel has not been as ruthless towards Poland as initially feared. Now, Swedish meteorologists report that Sweden also seems to have dodged the storm.
"This low-pressure system has lost its strength," says meteorologist Kjell Lund.
Poland has experienced significant rainfall in recent days, with the country on high alert for potential flooding, deploying 7,000 soldiers in preparation for the worst. However, the situation has stabilized, and weather warnings have been downgraded to only affect eastern Poland. Despite this, the emergency services have responded to over 4,000 incidents in the past two days, according to the newspaper Super Express.
Rain in Southern Sweden – But Sunshine Awaits Elsewhere
Earlier warnings suggested that the storm, named Gabriel, could also cause issues in Sweden as the low-pressure system moved towards the country over the weekend. However, this now seems unlikely.
While southern Sweden will see some rain, it won't be extreme.
"Expect about 10-20 millimeters over the weekend, with slightly more in some areas. But it won't be a real storm," says Kjell Lund, meteorologist at SMHI.
Moreover, the rain will be confined to Götaland and southern Svealand, up to around Stockholm. Those seeking sunshine should head north, where it appears they will completely avoid the precipitation.
"The winners in this week's weather lottery are Norrbotten and Västerbotten. It will be sunny there," says Kjell Lund.
