The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has issued a yellow warning for heavy rain stretching from Höör in Skåne to Orsa in Dalarna. The warning, in effect from 1 PM to 9 PM, predicts up to 40 millimeters of rain locally, with potential flooding risks. The recent heatwave is causing these intense showers, which are difficult to predict precisely. Meanwhile, high temperatures in Norrland are expected to drop by ten degrees over the weekend.

SMHI Issues Warning: Torrential Rain to Hit Sweden
The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has issued a yellow warning for torrential rain from Höör in Skåne to Orsa in Dalarna, covering approximately 580 kilometers as the crow flies. Meanwhile, the high temperatures in Norrland are on the decline.
"In some areas, temperatures could drop by ten degrees from Friday to Saturday," says meteorologist Josefine Qvarnesjö-Bergstedt.
On Friday, there is a risk of rain resembling cloudbursts over large parts of southern and central Sweden. SMHI's warning is in effect from 1 PM to 9 PM, with up to 40 millimeters of rain expected locally.
"Flooding may occur in basements and stormwater systems. Check if you can seal your basement or move items that might be damaged by water," writes SMHI.
The cause of the impending storm is the recent heat, according to Stormgeo meteorologist Josefine Qvarnesjö-Bergstedt.
"The water condenses, the air becomes saturated, and it rains out. When it has been very hot for a long time, as it is now, there can be heavy showers with thunder," she says.
Difficult to Predict the Rain: "Like Microwaving Popcorn"
Which area is expected to be hardest hit remains unclear.
"When it comes to this type of summer rain, it's a bit like microwaving popcorn. You know they will pop, but not when. In this yellow-marked area, there will be heavy showers, but we cannot say exactly where and when," says Josefine Qvarnesjö-Bergstedt and continues:
"To be on the safe side, warnings are issued for the entire risk area."
Heat Moving Away from Norrland
At the same time, SMHI's warning for high temperatures remains in eastern Norrland. Daytime temperatures are expected to be at least 30 degrees, but cooler air is already moving in by Saturday morning.
"In some areas, temperatures could drop by ten degrees from Friday to Saturday in this region. This will also end the current warning," says Qvarnesjö-Bergstedt.
Over the weekend, the heat will remain in southern Sweden with temperatures around 25 degrees and variable cloudiness.
"In Norrland, temperatures are expected to be around 20 degrees over the weekend," says Qvarnesjö-Bergstedt.
