SMHI Issues New Torrential Rain Warnings Across Sweden
SMHI has issued several warnings for rain on Friday. Torrential downpours are expected to affect large parts of Götaland, inner Svealand, southern Norrland, and Västerbotten, with rain essentially falling across the entire country.
– Both in the north and south, a month's worth of rainfall will occur in a single day, says meteorologist Josefine Qvarnesjö-Bergstedt.
After several days of sun and warmth, a deluge-like rain is expected, prompting SMHI to issue warnings across large parts of the country.
– Most likely, there will also be severe thunderstorms, says meteorologist Josefine Qvarnesjö-Bergstedt at Stormgeo.
Multiple Torrential Rain Warnings
The warnings apply on Friday to large parts of Götaland, inner Svealand, southern Norrland, and parts of Västerbotten.
– There will be lighter rain and thunderstorms throughout the country, not just where warnings have been issued.
SMHI warns of flooding in the affected areas.
– There could be flooding in basements and underpasses, leading to traffic problems, road flooding, hydroplaning, and reduced visibility on the roads, says Qvarnesjö-Bergstedt.
Rainfall in both the north and south is equivalent to a whole month's precipitation in one day.
Heat Warnings
At the same time, two heat warnings are in place across the country.
In northeastern Norrland, SMHI has issued an orange warning, with temperatures expected to reach "at least 30 degrees." Locally, temperatures could reach 33 degrees.
In eastern Västerbotten County and parts of northern Västernorrland County, a yellow warning has been issued for heat, expected to reach a maximum of 30 degrees.
Where there is both heat and thunderstorms, people are advised to avoid cooling off by the water.
– Water conducts electricity, so you should not swim or go boating, says Josefine Qvarnesjö-Bergstedt.
Heat Makes a Comeback
In the northern parts of the country, a significant temperature difference will be noticeable.
– In the north, there will be a marked temperature drop, from around 28 degrees down to between 15 and 22 degrees.
Across the country, it will be slightly cooler than in the past week, but heat lovers need not worry.
– We see a tendency for the heat to make a comeback next weekend, with temperatures of 25 degrees or higher.
