Small Aircraft Crashes into Lake
A small aircraft has crashed into Lake Limmaren during a training exercise near Norrtälje. Two people were on board.
– We have found one person in the plane, says Oscar Davila from the rescue services.
The alarm about the incident came at 16:13 on Friday. A plane had gone down in the water in Limmaren, just outside Norrtälje.
According to the police, it happened during landing.
A witness reportedly saw the crash and alerted SOS.
– There are supposed to be two people on board, and the focus is on locating them, says Lina Buurstra, assistant flight rescue leader at the Sea and Air Rescue Center JRCC.
Major Rescue Operation – One Found
A major rescue operation is underway, led by the rescue services who took over from the sea and air rescue after the plane was located.
The sea and air rescue remain on site, assisting with a rescue helicopter, from which rescuers have been winched down to the plane, reported to be underwater.
Divers, police, and two ambulance helicopters are also on site.
And just before 18:00, the rescue services announced that one person had been found.
– One person is in the plane, and we are trying to get them out. But I have no further status as the work is ongoing. We are trying to find the other person, says Oscar Davila, operations manager at Rescue Center Mitt.
Exercise with the Voluntary Air Corps
At the accident site, near Norrtälje Airport, the Voluntary Air Corps had been conducting an exercise with several small aircraft during the day.
– It is a single-engine propeller plane, which was part of the exercise within the framework of the Voluntary Air Corps, that crashed with two people on board, says regional flight chief Per Winberg.
He does not know how the accident occurred or at what altitude the plane was when it crashed.
The police will investigate the incident and have begun questioning people who can provide information.
