Severe Winds Cause Chaos in Stockholm: Glass Panels Shatter and Trees Fall

Strong winds are causing significant disruptions across Stockholm and central Sweden. A person has been seriously injured by a falling tree in Vasaparken. Glass panels and facades have collapsed, leading to several areas being cordoned off. SMHI warns of five challenging hours ahead.

SMHI has issued warnings for strong winds in Stockholm County and surrounding areas during the afternoon and evening.

Fallen trees are causing issues for train, subway, and road traffic around Stockholm.

Several areas in Stockholm, including Sundbyberg, Vasagatan, and Kungsbron, have been cordoned off. "Both north and south of Stockholm, the police are responding to incidents due to the wind," says police spokesperson Ola Österling.

SMHI warns that scaffolding and other temporary structures may be blown away.

"Secure loose items, such as your trampoline and garden furniture," advises the agency.

Warnings are in effect from 3:00 PM and will remain until 8:00 PM this evening.

In Vasaparken, Stockholm, a person was seriously injured by a falling tree. The alarm was raised by a doctor on the scene.

Glass Panels Fell from Building

On Vasagatan in Stockholm, Lotta Bondesson heard a sudden crash shortly after 4:00 PM while at work.

"It was a loud bang, and I heard some people screaming. When I looked out, I saw two large glass panels on the ground. It was really frightening," she says.

No one was physically injured when the panels fell, but several parked vehicles were hit.

Ellevio reports that the wind has caused some power outages.

"We are working as best as we can to address these during the afternoon and evening. However, the work must be carried out safely, and depending on where the faults are, we may need to wait until the weather calms down," the company states.

Strong winds are also affecting Östergötland, where trees have fallen on roads, reports Sveriges Radio's traffic department. The ferry routes Stegeborgsleden Slottsholmen and Norrkrog have been suspended until at least 7:00 PM due to the wind.
