Severe Rainfall Warning: 400 km Rain Band Threatens Parts of Sweden
Clear your gutters and move items that could be water-damaged from the basement. This is the advice from SMHI.
A 400 km long rain band stretches from Halmstad and Växjö up over Karlstad.
– Due to embedded rain showers, there could be very large amounts locally, says Johan Groth from Stormgeo.
The rain risks leading to flooding. Therefore, SMHI urges Swedes to prepare.
“Clear gutters, storm drains, and other water pathways so that water can flow away unobstructed,” writes the agency.
According to SMHI's forecast, up to 80 millimeters could fall on Tuesday.
The warning is in effect from 1 PM until 1 AM Wednesday.
Heavy Local Rainfall
According to meteorologist Johan Groth at Stormgeo, the rainstorm has certain areas with much heavier rain than others. As the storm is expected to move slowly, some places will experience a lot of rain at once.
– For most, it will likely be on the lower end, but due to these embedded showers, there could be very large amounts locally.
The warning extends from Älmhult in the south to Hagfors in the north. However, according to Johan Groth, it could spread beyond this area, moving both further south and east.
– One should not only look at the area where SMHI warns, as there could be significant rain further south and east towards Stockholm. But that would be more towards the night, he says.
