Salmonella Alert: Major Swedish Retailers Recall Eggs
Several food retailers and suppliers are recalling eggs from free-range hens due to a salmonella risk. The producer discovered salmonella at the site where the eggs were laid. Suppliers are taking the incident seriously and are launching an investigation.
On Wednesday, several major grocery chains, including Ica, Lidl, and Axfood, which owns Hemköp, Tempo, and Citygross, have recalled eggs. Supplier Kronägg has also announced a recall.
Ica on the Salmonella Alert: “Serious”
Ica states in a press release that the eggs are being recalled “as a precautionary measure.” This follows the discovery of salmonella in one of the henhouses during a routine check by the egg supplier.
“The products may pose a health risk, but heating to 70 degrees kills the salmonella bacteria,” writes Ica.
“At Ica, we conduct thorough quality checks on all our products. We take this incident seriously and are investigating with the supplier how this could have happened and how to prevent it in the future,” says Niklas Warén, Quality Manager at Ica Sweden, in a statement.
Customers who have purchased the eggs are advised to return them to the store where they were bought or file a complaint online or via customer service.
Axfood Recalls Eggs
Axfood is also recalling eggs due to the salmonella risk, as is Lidl. Lidl states in a press release:
“No eggs have been confirmed with contamination, but as a precaution, eggs from the current producer are being recalled.”
The company continues:
“Lidl Sweden regrets and takes the incident seriously. We are investigating the matter with the supplier and authorities,” writes Lidl.
Affected customers can return the eggs to the nearest store.
Kronägg also states that they take the incident seriously and are investigating the matter with authorities and the egg supplier.
