Royal Security Breach: Sensitive Information Leaked via Fitness App

Security personnel for the King and Queen have inadvertently exposed sensitive information on the fitness app Strava, reports Dagens Nyheter. The app revealed details of the royal couple's luxury trips abroad and mountain retreats in Storlien.

On Tuesday, DN disclosed that bodyguards employed by Säpo, responsible for protecting some of Sweden's most important figures, have leaked sensitive information on Strava. By analyzing 1,400 open training activities on the app, it was determined that the guards had disclosed locations of key figures, including Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, on several occasions.

However, it is not only the politicians' bodyguards who have made mistakes—those employed to protect the royal family have done the same.

Luxury Trip Revealed

As recently as late June, information from the King's luxury villa, Villa Mirage on the French Riviera, was published on Strava. Movements of the bodyguards around the palaces at Drottningholm and Solliden, as well as the King's mountain cabin in Storlien, were also visible. Activities were logged on a private island in the Indian Ocean, where the King and Queen reportedly vacationed, according to DN. In total, over 70 activities linked to the royal family were registered.

The Royal Court declined to comment on DN's information, citing security concerns, and referred to Säpo.

The agency told Expressen on Tuesday that they take the information about the bodyguards very seriously.

– We advise others to prevent tracking by leaving traces in digital media, and of course, we should follow them ourselves. In this case, we have not done so, says Carolina Björnsdotter Paasikivi, head of the security department at Säpo.
