Region Holds Press Conference After Paramedic Murder in Nordanstig
On Saturday, a paramedic was killed in Nordanstig, Hälsingland. The woman was on duty when she was attacked, and a man in his 20s has been arrested for murder. On Sunday, the region held a press conference in Hudiksvall.
– We have activated our emergency response to manage the situation, says Susanna Björklund, Deputy Director of Health and Medical Care in the region.
The attack occurred during a priority 3 mission, a lower priority alarm, when the female paramedic was assaulted and injured with a sharp object on Saturday. She later died from her injuries.
On Sunday afternoon, Region Gävleborg held a press conference about the murder. Susanna Björklund, Deputy Director of Health and Medical Care, and Liselott Sjöqvist, Operations Manager, participated.
– No one should have to risk their life at work, says Liselott Sjöqvist, Operations Manager in Region Gävleborg, who also stated that healthcare had previously been to the address.
Paramedic Activated Panic Alarm
– At some point while they were at the address, the panic alarm was activated. This means that police and emergency services quickly arrived on the scene, says Sjöqvist.
– The call was calm and undramatic.
The ambulance had not requested police assistance before arriving at the scene.
The incident has been reported to the Swedish Work Environment Authority, and the region has activated crisis support for its employees.
– Ambulance services are places where we care for and support each other. Many of my colleagues are unable to go to work, both out of fear and because they are very saddened, says Sjöqvist.
Man in His 20s Arrested
The Ambulance Union has strongly criticized employers for inadequate safety in ambulance services and wants addresses where threats and violence may occur to be flagged.
– The current focus is on reviewing legislation, but progress is very slow, says Sjöqvist.
A man in his 20s was arrested at the scene. He has since been detained on probable cause suspected of murder. The prosecutor told Sveriges Radio Ekot that ambulance personnel were called to the address to assist him.
