Putin on Call with Trump: Always Supported the USA
Last week, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin spoke on the phone for over an hour. Trump was 'disappointed' with the conversation. Putin, on the other hand, tried to highlight the USA's 'very good and special' relationship with Russia.
The call between the two presidents took place last Thursday. It was a fruitless discussion regarding peace in Ukraine—just hours after the phone call, Russia launched a major attack on Kyiv.
Now, Putin reveals new details about what happened during the call, writes Newsweek.
The Russian president claimed that Russia will do 'everything in its power' to 'achieve its goals' concerning the war in Ukraine.
These are words the president has repeated several times by now.
'Supported in the 1700s'
He also tried to appeal to Trump's nostalgic side by highlighting the historically 'very good and special' ties between the countries.
– We supported them when they wanted to become independent from Britain and even gave them weapons, he says according to Newsweek.
However, this is not entirely true—according to a historian Newsweek spoke with, Russia was neutral during the USA's war for independence and did not recognize the USA as a state until more than two decades after it became independent.
Trump: 'Very Disappointed'
Trump has previously expressed dissatisfaction with the phone call.
– I am very disappointed with the conversation I had with President Putin, because I don't think he's 'there.' I don't think he's looking to stop the war, and that's a shame, he said last Thursday.
The American pause on arms deliveries to Ukraine was also not discussed in the conversation.
