Prison Guard Faces Dismissal for Lack of Combat Skills

The Central Region of the Swedish Prison and Probation Service is considering dismissing a prison guard at Salberga Prison. The guard lacks acceptable skills in hand-to-hand combat and believes he can intervene in critical situations through 'intuitive waving.'

The man has been a prison guard since 2022. He first underwent basic training in 2023 but failed the combat training component despite two additional training sessions, according to a document from the Central Region of the Prison and Probation Service.

He is also reported to have difficulty setting boundaries with inmates, which 'creates friction with colleagues who maintain these boundaries.'

As a result, he was assigned a position as a construction guard without inmate contact. This assignment ends later this year, and there do not appear to be any tasks available for him afterward.

'Intuitive Waving'

It is noted that combat skills are fundamental to the safety of the operation:

'Based on statements from [the prison guard] that he would probably manage an intervention in a critical situation through intuitive 'waving' and that he also believes he is sure to avoid ending up in this type of situation, [the prison guard] lacks insight into the seriousness and importance of the issue.'

The regional manager now proposes that the personnel responsibility board of the Prison and Probation Service dismiss the man for personal reasons.

Salberga Prison has approximately 300 employees.
