Postnord has temporarily stopped sending packages from Sweden to the USA due to unclear tariff regulations following changes in US customs rules. This decision affects small and medium-sized e-commerce businesses and individuals, although gifts up to $100 can still be sent duty-free. The halt aims to prevent unnecessary returns across the Atlantic while awaiting further guidance from US authorities.

Postnord Halts Package Deliveries to the USA Amidst Uncertain Tariff Regulations
From now on, packages from Sweden and several other countries to the USA are being halted. For nearly two months, Postnord has awaited customs guidance from the USA—until then, packages will be returned to the sender.
The decision stems from the USA's revised customs regulations. Previously, goods valued under $800 (approximately 7,500 SEK) could enter the country without customs or tax charges. However, since this summer, the exemption for smaller shipments has ended. The specifics of how packages should be taxed, and the amounts, remain unclear.
"This is a global issue affecting all countries. For Postnord, it impacts a smaller portion of our volumes, but it is crucial for customers who previously sent goods duty-free," says Björn Bergman, Head of Communications at Postnord Group.
Packages will not be stockpiled at Postnord but returned to the sender.
Impact on Small E-commerce Businesses
The primary impact is on small and medium-sized e-commerce businesses, he continues. Individuals are also affected, but an exception allows them to send gifts up to a value of $100 duty-free.
Postnord has not disclosed how many shipments are awaiting transport.
"But every shipment is important to customers and consumers, of course," says Björn Bergman.
The pause in shipments is to prevent airlines from having to transport deliveries back across the Atlantic.
Lack of Information
The duration of the pause is unknown.
"We are working very closely with all postal operators in Europe to obtain all information from the American authorities on how we should clear the customs. This is information we have requested since June 30, but we have not yet received the complete picture," says Björn Bergman.
Regular letters without goods are not affected by the decision. Nor are shipments sent from the USA.
