Political Turmoil: Will Johan Forssell Remain as Migration Minister?

Vice Prime Minister Ebba Busch (KD) has expressed full confidence in Migration Minister Johan Forssell. Forssell himself wishes to remain in his position. However, political scientist Jonas Hinnfors suggests that the decision is not entirely up to him.

Johan Forssell (M) has a son with alleged connections to extremist groups. On Thursday morning, he addressed the situation on TV4's 'Nyhetsmorgon,' stating his intention to continue as Migration Minister.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) has affirmed his continued confidence in Forssell. Government colleague and KD leader Ebba Busch also supports Forssell, stating at a press conference that he should remain in his role.

"The Ball is in the Opposition's Court"

However, this does not guarantee Forssell's position, according to political scientist Jonas Hinnfors.

  • "The ball is in the opposition's court if they continue to push the issue strongly. The government and Forssell have emphasized the importance of children developing healthy norms. If the opposition focuses on this theme, the Prime Minister might reconsider Forssell's position."

Political scientist Marja Lemne shares this view, noting the government's emphasis on parental responsibility in gang-related issues.

  • "This presents a significant credibility issue for the government, in my assessment. Discussions on conduct, for example, will not shift in the government's favor given this situation," she told Dagens Nyheter.

Party Leaders Silent

The Left Party has called for Forssell to be questioned in the social insurance committee, a move supported by S and MP.

Meanwhile, opposition leaders Magdalena Andersson, Nooshi Dadgostar, and spokespersons Daniel Helldén and Amanda Lind have remained silent on the matter.

  • "It's hard to know what they are thinking right now," says Jonas Hinnfors.

"Chasing Someone Who's Down"

The opposition might stop highlighting the issue if voters perceive Forssell as a struggling father rather than a politician.

  • "If voters see him primarily as a private individual fighting, it might appear as if they are chasing someone who's already down."

  • "However, the opposition could focus on the son's past involvement in violent environments and the security risk it poses. Such security threats cannot be tolerated by a government," says Jonas Hinnfors.
