Philosopher: What Sets the Happy Apart from the Unhappy

How do we live our best lives? Philosopher Lars Svendsen's thoughtful segment on Sommar i P1 explores what hope can achieve for humanity.

He writes books about things he knows nothing about. It sounds risky as a method, but for Svendsen, it's the springboard into new thoughts and knowledge.

The plumber's son, who was the first in his family to earn a university degree, says that "writing is thinking."

But when death knocks on his father's door, the philosopher no longer has time to think, only to act. Instinctively, he re-evaluates his life and chooses what holds value: being there for his father and finding hope for both of them in the moment.

Svendsen starts from the personal to examine the concept of "hope," and how hopeful people fare better in life than those who never dare to hope.

With life seen through the lens of hope, people gain a forward momentum, an agency that might otherwise be lost.

It's not a miracle, but it feels like one.

Ninety minutes with the philosopher not only makes me feel a bit wiser but even... hopeful.
