Peter Haber Opens Up About His Challenging Childhood: 'Would Have Gone to Jail'
Actor Peter Haber shared the painful experiences of his childhood, revealing in his 'Sommar i P1' talk that he suffered physical abuse from his father.
- "In today's world, you would have gone to jail if anyone had known," he stated in the program.
Peter Haber, 72, is well-known for his roles, from Martin Beck in the 'Beck' series to Sune's father Rudolf in the 'Sune' stories.
In his 'Sommar i P1' talk, the actor opened up about his difficult upbringing.
His father physically abused him and drowned his sorrows in alcohol, according to Haber.
- "I got a lot of beatings from you as a child. Never my sister, but I did. Sudden slaps and blows, and sometimes pure punishment with the back of a clothes brush on the bottom. In today's world, you would have gone to jail if anyone had known," Haber said in his summer program.
'Humiliated' and 'Sad'
The actor shared that he had repressed much of it, but when his daughter asked Haber's sister about their childhood, it resurfaced. He felt both 'humiliated' and 'sad,' he said.
His father also forbade him from listening to the Beatles and forced him to listen to classical music, according to the 72-year-old. He secretly listened to the Beatles.
Today, however, the actor has found healing by doing the opposite of what his parents did.
-
"When my children have played hip hop music, I can admit that hip hop is not really my thing, but I have still stayed in the room and listened with interest and asked questions about the music. That's the kind of husband, father, and grandfather I want to be for my wife, my children, and my grandchildren," he said, continuing:
-
"A man who is there for them emotionally. To accept what was and do something about what can be changed," he said.
