Passenger Ferry Crashes into Dock in Central Stockholm

A passenger ferry collided with a dock in central Stockholm. – It honked like crazy and then slammed into the dock. It was a loud crash, says a witness. The police report that no one was injured in the accident.

S/S Stockholm crashed into a dock at Kastellholmen in central Stockholm.

– It was traveling at 5-6 knots and couldn't stop, so they honked and warned the tourists on the pier to move aside, a witness recounts.

– It honked like crazy and then slammed into the dock. It was a loud crash, says another witness who was on Erstaberget and saw the accident.

According to photos obtained by Expressen, passengers were evacuated to another boat.

The shipping company Strömma confirms the incident and tells P4 Stockholm that the accident was due to a power outage.

– The boat experienced a blackout near Kastellholmen and became uncontrollable. So the boat continued slowly, and since it's shallow at the end, you could say the boat gently and cautiously ran aground but collided with a wooden pier, says business area manager Peter Henricsson to the radio.

Passengers on the Boat: “Frightening”

One of the passengers on the boat tells Expressen that the whole experience was “frightening.”

– Suddenly, they announced over the speakers that they had lost control of the boat, followed by a crash. My nine-year-old daughter was very upset; she won't dare to go on a boat again, says a father who was on the boat with his family to Expressen.

– It's frightening that this can happen in Stockholm and that it's the third boat in a short time. At the same time, we were very lucky; we were rescued very quickly by another boat.

The marine police state that the crash will not lead to a criminal investigation as no one was injured, and it is considered an accident.

However, they are conducting interviews with the crew for documentation. The Swedish Transport Agency will handle the case.
