No Ceasefire Agreement After Trump and Putin's Meeting
After nearly three hours, the first part of the summit between Trump and Putin concluded. At a press conference, the leaders thanked each other but had no agreement to present. – We are not quite there, says Trump. Without taking any questions, Trump and Putin soon left the press conference.
Around half past midnight, Swedish time, Presidents Trump and Putin emerged from the meeting room at the military base in Alaska.
They had been negotiating behind closed doors for almost three hours, along with representatives from each country.
After the meeting, Russia's special envoy Kirill Dmitriev sent out positive vibes in his comment on the negotiation to the Russian state news agency Interfax.
– Wonderful, everything is wonderful, he says.
Trump and Putin then jointly stepped onto a podium in front of journalists, against the backdrop of Russian and American flags.
Putin: We Want to Stop the War
Putin was the first to speak. He thanked Trump and said that there had been a "constructive atmosphere" during the meeting.
– I and Trump have very good contact, says Putin.
He talked about the war and said he wants to see an end to it.
– Everything that is happening is a tragedy for us. We are very interested in stopping the war.
– I hope that the agreement we have reached together will help us get closer to that goal and pave the way for peace in Ukraine.
However, the agreement they reached did not seem to be something Trump agreed with.
No Final Agreement
Trump said in his speech that it had been a productive meeting and that the leaders agreed on several points. But no final agreement had been reached, according to the president.
– We are not quite there yet, says Trump.
He said there are a few points left to discuss, some of which are "significant."
– It's not a deal until it's a deal, says Trump.
To Call NATO After the Meeting
Furthermore, Trump stated that he would make some phone calls after the meeting.
– I will call NATO shortly, I will call several people I think are appropriate, and I will of course call President Zelensky to tell him about today's meeting. In the end, it's up to them.
When Trump concluded his speech by thanking Putin, he said they would meet again – and received a quick reply from the Russian president:
– Next time in Moscow.
A comment that Trump said he "might possibly see happening."
Thereafter, the presidents walked straight out of the press conference, without answering any of the journalists' questions.
